Not as Ruff!!!

Ruff (Philomachus pugnax)

This male Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) was taken during the winter period when the they are in their winter plumage, they look very ordinary in comparison to their colourful plumages and elaborate displays performed during the breeding season. This was taken at Marshside in Southport!!!

I captured this image of a Cormorant flying past me as I was walking along the Coastal path not far from St Bees Head in Cumbria, this is a very beautiful location and a peaceful one to and along the way you see a vast range of species, from Common Terns, to sightings of Seals and Porpoises. St Bees Head is also a major breeding site for Cormorants, Gulls and Kittiwakes, there are also reports of Puffins in this area, although at the time I went to visit and spending several hours watching I was disappointed not to see any, maybe a location to try again in the future.

These images feature in a project that I have just completed on the Cumbrian Coast. With these images I wanted to convey how the effects of humans are impacting on the coastal landscape. No matter how beautiful and natural the landscape looks, the way in which humans are leaving their footprints is detrimental to the survival of this environment. However on the positive side, these stunning locations at Hodbarrow and the Dunes featured below are protected sites.

For a project at Uni on Species, I choose the Deer. This image of a Red Deer Stag is one of my best shots, as he is looking out of the image and challenging the viewer. These are very magnificent and regal animals and I particularly like his domineering pose and arrogant gaze depicted.

Sorry for the distinct lack of postings on my blog this was due to several projects I have been working on for my second year of Wildlife Photography. So here goes my next posting!!!

On a trip to Marshside at Southport in December 2009 I spotted this Pink Footed Goose coming my way, it was well worth a hair-raising journey to get there in the snow and although it was cold, the beautiful crisp sun kept me feeling quite toasty!!

I guess we all have to start somewhere, this in my first entry on my blog and hopefully the first of many. I am currently studying at Blackpool and Fylde College in BA (Hons) Wildlife Photography, this course is in conjunction with Lancaster University.
From an early age I have been fascinated in wildlife and nature and in my early teens I developed an interest in photography, so what better than to be able to combine the two. I consider myself to be very fortunate that the only course in Europe on wildlife photography is based virtually on my doorstep.
What I have been taught so far is not just to take a picture of an animal for the sake of taking a picture, because we should not be subject driven but instead aim to be concept driven. This course has really opened my eyes regarding this theory ... to find what drives you to photograph a certain subject in a certain way and what are your emotions and motives for doing so.
I hope you enjoy my work, feel free to comment on them, it would be great to know what you think and please be patient if I disappear for a while as I am also undertaking large photography projects. :-)
